It is located to the south of the Strait of Magellan, which separates the island from the continent. To the East lies the South Atlantic Ocean; to the West, the Pacific; and to the South, the wonderful Beagle Channel. Ushuaia lies within Argentinian territory. It is the capital of the province and it is known as the southernmost city in the world. It lies between the Beagle Channel and the Fuegian Andes, covered by woods made up by lengas, ñires and coihues. Its population reaches 80,000 inhabitants with a significant array of economic activities. Not only does it provide varied accommodation options including all categories but also diverse restaurants serving local dishes such as king crab, black hake and fuegian lamb. It represents the access to Antarctica, where cruises set sail towards the white continent in the summertime. Sea birdwatching tours are available at the Beagle Channel.
The port lies meters away from the main street (San Martín Ave.) and so are museums, tourist information offices, travel agencies, air companies and banks. Ushuaia may be accessed by land through National Route 3. It lies approximately 3,200 km away from Buenos Aires. It is also reached by air.
